Fibreglass pool relining cost is worked out per square metre of surface, not per litre of water. At the time of writing (October 2026), contractors quote fibreglass relining from around R600 per m2, with a full structural reline at R850 to R900 per m2. For a typical home pool that puts the job from around R25,000, and most land between R25,000 and R50,000 depending on size, shape and how much repair the old surface needs.
Those are market prices from South African contractors, not Kwik Pools prices. Below we show how to measure your pool’s surface area, what a proper reline includes, which extras add to the quote and how long the job takes, so you can read a quote with some confidence.

Working out your pool’s surface area
Because pool relining cost is quoted per square metre, a rough surface area lets you sanity check any quote. You need the length, the width and the depth at the shallow and deep ends.
- Multiply length by width to get the floor area.
- Add the shallow and deep depths and halve the total to get an average depth.
- Add up all four sides to get the perimeter.
- Multiply the perimeter by the average depth to get the wall area.
- Add floor and walls together, then allow a little extra for steps, benches and seats.
Take a common 8m x 4m pool that runs from 1m to 2m deep. The floor is 32 m2. The average depth is 1.5m and the perimeter is 24m, so the walls come to 36 m2. That gives roughly 68 m2 before steps, which is why an 8m x 4m reline costs a lot more than the floor size alone suggests.
Freeform pools are harder to measure, so contractors usually measure on site. If you also want the volume for chemicals or refilling, our pool volume calculator does the sums in litres.
What fibreglass pool relining includes
Fibreglass pool relining is a laminate: glass fibre mat soaked in resin and built up on the old shell, then finished with a coloured topcoat. The price per m2 depends on how many layers go on and how much preparation the surface needs. A full reline uses a heavier chopped strand mat with a fine tissue layer on top before the topcoat.
A complete quote should cover:
- Draining the pool and cleaning the shell.
- Grinding or sanding back the old surface and removing loose or hollow material.
- Opening and repairing cracks before the laminate goes on.
- Priming so the fibreglass lining bonds to a sound, dry surface.
- Laying the mat and resin on the floor, walls and steps.
- Sanding, then the topcoat in your chosen colour, with a non-slip finish on steps.
- Curing time and a proper refill and start-up.

Extras that change the pool relining cost
Two pools of the same size can get quite different quotes. These are the items that move the number:
| Extra | Why it matters | Market price guide |
|---|---|---|
| Crack repairs | Must be repaired before laminating | From around R1,500 to R4,000 for minor cracks |
| Waterline tiles | New mosaic band to finish the reline | From around R450 to R950 per m2 incl tiles |
| Coping replacement | Loose or broken edge slabs | From around R450 to R1,200 per metre in Cape Town |
| Paving lift and relay | Damaged surround next to the pool | From around R250 to R550 per m2 in Cape Town |
| Heavy preparation | Hollow plaster, old paint or blisters | Quoted after inspection |
Old paint is the classic hidden cost, because fibreglass won’t bond to a painted surface that is flaking. Existing fibreglass with blisters also needs grinding out first. Our article on fibreglass pool blisters explains what causes them and how they are repaired.

A recent swimming pool relining job
On a recent Kwik Pools job, a rectangular pool was relined in bright blue and finished with a mosaic band at the waterline. New concrete coping slabs were set around the edge, then the old paving was lifted and the surround and side path were re-paved in large grey slabs with a cobble border.
It is a good example of why the quote for a swimming pool relining job often includes more than the lining. Once the pool is drained and the edge is open, it is the cheapest time to sort coping and paving, and our pool paving and coping team handles both. For the full process on the pool itself, see our fibreglass relining service.
Timeline and lifespan of a fibreglass lining
How long a reline takes on site depends on the pool size, the prep the old surface needs and the weather, since the lining needs dry conditions. We give you a timeline with the quote. Preparation takes the most time, and cracks or hollow plaster can stretch it. Resin and topcoat need dry conditions to cure properly, so rain days push the programme out.
How long a fibreglass lining lasts depends on three things: the preparation underneath, the number and quality of the layers, and how well the water is looked after afterwards. A well applied lining in balanced water lasts many years, and the topcoat can be refreshed later without starting again.
Protect the new surface from day one. Low pH, very high chlorine and leaving a pool empty in hot sun all shorten the life of a fresh lining. Follow the start-up instructions you are given, add chemicals to water and never the other way round, and test the water often for the first few weeks.
Our guide to new fibreglass pool lining aftercare covers the first month in detail.
Pool relining Cape Town: weather and water
For pool relining, Cape Town weather matters, so plan for the dry months. Winter rain and runoff make it hard to keep a drained shell dry, and groundwater can push on an empty pool in wet ground. Summer brings its own issue: the south-easter blows dust onto fresh resin, so good contractors work early, cover the pool and clean between coats.
Many older Cape Town pools are marbelite that has gone rough, stained or hollow in places. Fibreglass suits these well because the laminate bridges fine cracks and gives a smooth, non-porous surface that algae struggles to grip. A pool with lots of crazing is often a better candidate for relining than for another coat of plaster.
Water is the other cost to plan for. Refilling a pool comes off the municipal account, and the City of Cape Town charges residential water in steps, from R25.42 per kilolitre up to R100.71 per kilolitre in the top step for 2026/27. Spreading the refill over a few days can keep more of it out of the top step, so ask your contractor about timing.
If your pool is past patching, a reline is often the best long-term spend. Ask our team to measure up and quote a fibreglass pool relining cost for your pool, or look at our wider pool renovations service if coping, paving or equipment are also on the list.
Relining questions
What is the fibreglass pool relining cost per square metre?
At the time of writing (October 2026), fibreglass relining starts from around R600 per m2, and a full reline with a heavier mat and tissue layer runs R850 to R900 per m2. Ask our team for a current quote for your pool.
How much does it cost to reline an 8m x 4m pool?
One published Gauteng price list starts an 8m x 4m fibreglass reline at R35,250. Cape Town quotes depend on depth, steps and how much repair the old surface needs, so get the pool measured.
Can you put fibreglass over a marbelite pool?
Yes. Fibreglass is often laid over an old concrete or marbelite shell once loose and hollow material is removed, cracks are repaired and the surface is primed. Preparation decides how well the lining bonds.
Is fibreglass relining better than re-marbeliting?
Fibreglass costs more up front but gives a smooth, non-porous surface that bridges fine cracks. Re-marbelite is cheaper, from around R450 per m2 in Cape Town, and suits a sound shell where the owner keeps the water well balanced.
How long does it take to reline a pool with fibreglass?
It depends on the pool size, how much prep the old surface needs and the weather, because fibreglass needs dry conditions to cure. We confirm the timeline when we quote. Rain, extensive crack repairs or old paint that has to come off can add days.
