If the water stays cloudy no matter how much chlorine goes in, the filter is usually the reason. Kwik Pools does pool filter repairs across Cape Town — sand changes, valve rebuilds, leaks and replacements — and we check the whole plant rather than just selling you a new filter.
The most common symptom. Chemicals cannot fix water that is not being filtered properly.
A gauge that rises soon after backwashing means the sand has channelled or cemented.
A cracked lateral or a broken standpipe inside the filter body.
A perished multiport spider gasket, and a common cause of quietly wasted water.
Often a blocked or packed filter rather than a failing pump.
If it needs backwashing every few days, the media is finished, not dirty.
A sand filter is a simple thing — a pressure vessel, a bed of media, laterals at the bottom and a valve on top. Each part fails in its own recognisable way, and only some of them mean a new filter.
Worn smooth or set solid with calcium. A media change fixes it.
The fingers at the base of the filter. Cracked ones send sand straight back to the pool.
The multiport spider gasket. Cheap to replace, and it stops water weeping to waste.
A gauge reading nothing useful hides every other problem in the plant.
Usually terminal. A pressure vessel with a crack in it needs replacing, not patching.
An undersized filter never clears the water however well it is maintained.

We read the pressure, check flow at the returns, and open the filter to see the media rather than guessing at it. Sand that has channelled or set solid looks nothing like sand that is simply due for a wash.
Then we check the valve, the laterals and the body. Plenty of filters we are called to replace only need media and a gasket, and we would rather tell you that.
Pressure, flow and pump behaviour together tell us far more than any one reading.

A new filter behind a failing pump, or on a suction line drawing air, will not give you clear water either. The two work as a pair and we check them as a pair.
If the pump is on its way out at the same time, we will say so upfront rather than letting you replace one part now and the other in three months.

Every few years for most Cape Town pools. It wears smooth and stops trapping fine debris. In the harder water of the Northern Suburbs it can cement up sooner, which is why we open the filter and look rather than going by age alone.
Almost always a cracked lateral or a broken standpipe inside the filter. It needs opening up to confirm, and it is usually repairable without replacing the whole filter.
High pressure means flow is restricted — typically dirty or cemented media, but sometimes a blockage elsewhere. If it climbs again soon after backwashing, the media is finished.
No, and we would not try. A cracked pressure vessel is a safety issue and needs replacing. Cracked valves and internals, on the other hand, are routinely repaired.
A correctly sized one will. Oversizing beyond what the pump can drive does not help, so we size the filter to the pool and the pump together.
