Most of a pool’s plumbing is buried, which is why pipe problems usually show up as something else first — a pool that drops, a pump that will not prime, or a wet patch on the lawn that never dries. Kwik Pools does pool pipe and plumbing repairs across Cape Town, and we trace before we dig.

Signs your pool pipes are leaking

  • The pump loses prime

Air drawn in on the suction side almost always means a cracked pipe, a failed joint or a leaking valve before the pump.

  • Bubbles blowing into the pool

The same fault seen from the other end: air pulled in before the pump gets pushed out through the returns.

  • A patch that never dries

Soft ground, lush grass or damp paving on the run between the pool and the plant room.

  • The water bill jumped

A pinhole in a pressure line can run thousands of litres a month without anything visible on the surface.

  • Loss only when the pump runs

That points squarely at a pressure-side return line, and it is the easiest fault to confirm.

  • Loss with the pump off

That points at the shell or a gravity-fed line instead, so we test differently.

Try this first: mark the water level and watch it for 24 hours with the pump off, then again with it running. Losing more with the pump on points at the pressure side. Send us both readings and we can usually narrow it down before we arrive.

Why Cape Town pool pipework fails

A lot of the 1970s and 1980s builds around the Southern and Northern Suburbs still run their original pipework. The fittings of that era go brittle long before the pipe itself does, so the joint fails first — and ground movement does the rest.

  • Brittle old fittings

Forty-year-old joints crack under normal pressure long before the pipe gives up.

  • Ground movement

Wet winter, dry summer. The ground swells and shrinks around a rigid buried pipe every year.

  • Tree roots

Roots lift and crush buried lines, especially in the older established Southern Suburbs gardens.

  • Bad previous repairs

A patch done without cutting back to sound pipe simply moves the failure a metre along.

  • Freeze and pressure spikes

A blocked line or a valve closed against a running pump puts pressure where it was never designed to go.

  • Poor original bedding

Pipe laid on rubble rather than sand wears a weak point over decades.

We find the leak before we dig

Digging up a pool surround on a guess is expensive and usually unnecessary. We pressure-test each line separately so we know which one has failed, then trace the run and mark the actual point of failure.

In most cases that turns a full paving lift into one small excavation, and you know the cost before anything is opened up.

  1. We listen to the symptoms

Prime problems, bubbles, where the ground is wet. It rules a lot out before we start.

  2. We isolate and pressure test

Each suction and return line tested separately, so the failed line is identified rather than assumed.

  3. We trace the run

We locate the line and mark the failure point, so the excavation is targeted.

  4. You get the findings and a quote

What failed, what it takes to fix, and what it costs, before any work starts.

  5. We repair and re-test

The line is repaired, pressure tested again, and the ground made good.

When to repair and when to re-pipe

A single clean break in otherwise sound pipe is a repair, and we will tell you so rather than upselling a re-pipe you do not need.

But when we open a line and find the pipe has gone chalky and brittle throughout, patching one section just moves the next failure a metre down the run. On those pools we quote the re-pipe honestly against the repair so you can decide with real numbers.

Pool plumbing repairs across Cape Town

We work the whole metro from our Plattekloof base — the Northern Suburbs, Southern Suburbs, Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl, South Peninsula, Helderberg, West Coast and the Cape Winelands. Not sure the pipes are the problem? Start with pool leak detection.

Questions we get about pool plumbing

Can you repair a pool pipe without breaking up all my paving?

Usually, yes. Because we pressure-test and trace the line first, we know roughly where the failure is before anything is lifted. Most jobs come down to one localised excavation.

How do I know if it is the pipes or the pool shell leaking?

The quickest indicator is whether the water loss changes when the pump is off. Loss that stops with the pump off points at pressurised pipework; loss that continues points at the shell or a gravity line.

Do you replace old pool plumbing completely?

We do. On older pools where the pipework has gone brittle throughout, a full re-pipe is often better value than a run of individual repairs, and we quote both so the comparison is clear.

How long does a pipe repair take?

A located and exposed pipe repair is often a same-day job plus curing time. A full re-pipe is scheduled and quoted per pool.

Will my paving be put back?

Yes. We reinstate the ground and paving as part of the job, not as an extra.
