Usually a failing motor winding, a seized bearing or moisture in the motor. Do not keep resetting it.
Air is being drawn in on the suction side — a cracked pipe, a perished lid seal or a failing valve.

This is the question every customer asks and the one the industry is worst at answering honestly. A pump is a motor and a wet end, and either can be serviced. Here is roughly how we judge it.
Bearings, mechanical seals, capacitors, impellers, lids and baskets. All routine parts on a sound motor.
A motor that has already been rewound once, or a pump where parts are getting hard to source.
Burnt-out windings, a cracked wet end, or a pump so undersized for the pool that it will keep failing.
An old single-speed pump on a big pool. A correctly sized replacement often pays for itself in running cost.
Sometimes the fault is a blocked line or a failing filter, and replacing the pump would have fixed nothing.
An oversized pump is not a better pump. We size to the pool and the filter, not to the biggest box.

We test the motor and the wet end separately, check the suction side for air leaks, and look at the filter and valves before condemning anything. A surprising number of pump complaints turn out to be a blocked line or a valve set wrong.
If it needs replacing we size the new pump to your pool and filter, and plumb it in neatly so the next service is straightforward.

If the suction line leaks air, the smartest pump in the world will still lose prime. If the filter is packed solid, a new pump will not clear the water.

Repair is usually cheaper up front and often the right call — bearings, seals and capacitors are routine parts. Replacement makes sense when the windings have burnt out or the wet end is cracked. We quote both where both are real options.
With reasonable care, many years. What kills pumps early is running dry, a leaking seal letting water into the motor, and ignoring the noise that bearings make before they fail.
Usually a failing motor or moisture inside it. It needs testing rather than resetting — each reset puts the motor under load again and can finish it off.
We can, but bigger is not automatically better. An oversized pump can push water through the filter too fast to clean it properly. We size to your pool and filter.
