When pool coping needs attention

• Slabs that rock or lift when you stand on the edge
• Cracked or blown grout along the waterline joint
• Coping pulling away from the shell, leaving a gap water runs into
• Chipped or stained edges on an otherwise good pool
• Sharp or worn edges that are unpleasant to sit on

That gap between coping and shell matters more than it looks. Water running behind the edge washes out bedding, and on a marbelite pool it is a common start point for the cracks we end up repairing under pool crack repair.

Pool coping materials that work in Cape Town

Travertine is everywhere at the moment for good reason: it stays cool underfoot in a Cape summer and it looks superb. It does need sealing, especially next to a salt pool. Sandstone and slate suit older homes and warmer palettes but mark more easily. Exposed aggregate and textured concrete are the workhorses, cheap, grippy and hard wearing. Porcelain pavers have taken over on modern builds because they barely stain and hold colour under UV.

Whatever we lay, it needs grip when wet and it needs to not roast bare feet in February. We will bring samples and let you stand on them in the sun before you commit.

How we do the work

We lift the failed sections, deal with the bedding underneath rather than relaying onto the same problem, and set new coping with the correct fall away from the pool so rain runs off instead of into it. Joints are sealed with a flexible sealant at the pool edge, not rigid grout that cracks the first time the ground moves. Where the paving is being redone anyway it is the right moment to look at drainage, because a lot of Cape Town pool decks were laid with the fall going the wrong way.

If the shell is also due, doing coping and resurfacing together saves a second disruption, which is why both usually land inside a full pool renovation.

Questions we get

Can you replace just the damaged slabs?

Often yes, and we will match as closely as the material allows. Ten year old stone has weathered, so an exact match is rarely possible on a highly visible edge.

Do I need to drain the pool?

Usually only to just below the coping line so the joint can be prepared and sealed dry.

Will salt water damage the stone?

Unsealed sandstone and cement can mark over time. Sealing solves it, and we will tell you the sealing interval for whatever you choose.

Can you do the surrounding deck too?

Yes, including timber and composite work under pool decking.
