Salt Chlorinator Price, Sizing and Running Costs

Swimming pool at a South Peninsula home near Fish Hoek with False Bay views and coastal fynbos garden

A salt chlorinator turns dissolved salt in your pool into chlorine, so you stop buying and dosing granular chlorine every week. At the time of writing (October 2026), a budget self-cleaning unit costs from around R5,995 at SA online pool shops, and supply plus installation runs from around R4,000 to R11,000. The real cost question is the one that follows: what it costs to keep running, and when the cell will need replacing.

Below we break down unit prices by pool size, fitting costs, salt cell replacement, sizing and how the running costs stack up against chlorine. If you already know you want one, our salt chlorinator installation page explains how we fit them.

How a salt water pool makes its own chlorine

A salt water pool is still a chlorine pool. The difference is where the chlorine comes from. Water flows through a cell fitted in the return line after the filter. Inside are coated titanium plates, and a low-voltage current passed across them splits some of the salt into chlorine, which sanitises the water and then turns back into salt.

The salt level is far lower than the sea. Most domestic systems run somewhere around 3,000 to 4,000 ppm, but the right figure is whatever your unit's manual says. Too little and the cell cannot make enough chlorine. Too much can damage equipment and some surfaces.

Because the cell only works while water flows through it, chlorine production is tied to your pump hours. That link matters for both sizing and running costs.

Salt chlorinator price by pool size

These are third-party market prices at the time of writing (October 2026), not Kwik Pools prices. They give a sense of the range from budget to branded.

Salt chlorinator price guide, October 2026
Unit typeRated pool sizeMarket price
Small unit, not self-cleaningUp to 40kLFrom around R6,200
Budget self-cleaning unitUp to 80kLFrom around R5,995

Small self-cleaning unit, established brandSmall poolsAround R10,520
Medium self-cleaning unit40 to 90kLAround R11,460 on sale

Notice that the cheapest unit is not the smallest. Price follows brand, build quality, local backup and features as much as capacity. Things that move the salt chlorinator price:

  • Self-cleaning: reverse-polarity cells shed scale on their own, which suits hard water and saves on manual cell cleaning.
  • Capacity headroom: a bigger cell running at a lower output tends to last longer than a small one flat out.
  • Controls: digital output settings, salt and flow sensors, and a boost or super-chlorinate mode.
  • Spares and service: a brand with replacement cells and repair support locally is worth paying a bit more for.

Salt chlorinator installation cost

A Cape Town pool shop lists salt chlorinator installation labour at around R1,550, and general market guides put supply and fitting together at R4,000 to R11,000. The labour side covers mounting the control box, cutting the cell into the return line, wiring the unit to switch with the pump, adding salt and setting it up.

What can add to the bill:

  1. Plumbing that needs reworking because there is no straight run after the filter for the cell.
  2. No suitable plug point or weatherproof spot near the pump. Any new circuit or point is a job for a qualified electrician.
  3. A pump that is too weak or on its last legs, since the cell needs steady flow.
  4. Water that needs balancing first, especially high calcium or a pool that has gone green.

If you are switching over from chlorine, our salt water pool conversion checklist covers what to check before the unit goes in, and the salt water pool conversion service page explains the full job.

Sizing a salt chlorinator for your litres

Every salt chlorinator is rated by pool volume, usually in kilolitres (kL). One kL is 1,000 litres. If you do not know your volume, our pool volume calculator will get you there from length, width and average depth.

A few rules of thumb we use:

  • Choose a unit rated comfortably above your volume. A rating of exactly your pool size leaves no spare capacity for hot weeks or parties.
  • Allow for sun and use. An unshaded pool in a hot inland suburb burns through chlorine faster than a shaded one near the coast.
  • Match the cell to your pump hours. If you run the pump on a short timer to save power, the cell has fewer hours to make chlorine, so it needs more capacity.

That last point ties in with automation. A good timer setup keeps pump hours and chlorine production in step, and our pool automation and timers service can set that up properly.

Rule of thumb: undersizing is the most common salt chlorinator mistake we see. The unit runs at full output all season, the cell wears out early and the pool still goes cloudy in a heatwave.

Salt cell replacement: cost and lifespan

The cell is the part that wears out. One budget cell is specified at about 9,000 hours at correct chemistry, so a pump running eight hours a day would get roughly three years from it. Poor water balance shortens that a lot.

Salt cell replacement cost, October 2026
ItemMarket price
Generic replacement cellFrom around R2,500 to R4,000
Branded replacement cellFrom around R4,899
Budget self-cleaning cellAround R5,395
Cell for a 75kL budget unitAround R6,893
Professional cell installationR950 to R1,800

What kills cells early is scale. High pH and hard water leave white calcium deposits on the plates, the unit works harder and the coating wears faster. Keep pH in range, test regularly and follow the cleaning steps in your manual, using only the method the maker approves. Our pool water testing and balancing service takes care of that if you would rather not.

Before buying a new cell, rule out the easy things. Low salt, a flow switch fault or a dirty filter can all look like a dead cell. Our guide on a salt chlorinator not producing chlorine walks through the checks.

Salt pool cost vs chlorine over a year

The salt pool cost picture has a big upfront figure and smaller running costs. On the chlorine side, an 8kg tub of HTH granular chlorine is around R479 and a 10kg budget tub around R499.99 at the time of writing. How many tubs you go through in a year depends on pool size, sun, swimmers and how well the pool is covered.

On the salt side, the ongoing costs are:

  • Salt top-ups: salt is not used up, but it is lost through splash-out, backwashing and rain overflow, so you add some each season.
  • Electricity: the cell draws a modest amount while the pump runs. On the City of Cape Town Home User tariff, Block 1 is R3.56 per kWh, so check your unit's rating.
  • The cell: divide the replacement cell price by its expected years of life to get a yearly cost.
  • pH adjuster: salt pools tend to drift up in pH, so you use acid to bring it down.

Put those against your chlorine bill and most pools that run all year come out ahead after a few seasons. Pools that sit unused most of winter may take longer. If your pump is old and thirsty, it is worth reading our guide to pool pump prices as well, since a more efficient pump changes the maths.

Cape Town conditions and your salt chlorinator

Coastal salt air is rough on electronics and metal fittings, and adding salt to the water does not help screws, clamps and older heat exchangers. Mount the control box out of direct rain and sun, and read our note on coastal pool equipment corrosion if you live near the sea.

Winter rain matters too. Heavy downpours raise the water level and dilute the salt, so check the salt reading after a wet spell. Summer wind and evaporation do the opposite to the water level, but salt stays behind, so topping up with fresh water does not raise salt.

Most marbelite, fibreglass and painted pools handle normal salt levels well, but ask about older natural stone coping and some metal ladders and lights first.

Salt chlorinator questions

How much is a salt chlorinator in South Africa?

At the time of writing (October 2026), budget self-cleaning units from SA online pool shops start from around R5,995, with branded mid-size units nearer R11,460. Supply and installation together runs from around R4,000 to R11,000 depending on the unit. Ask our team for a current quote for your pool.

What size salt chlorinator do I need?

Size it by your pool volume in litres, then add headroom. Pick a unit rated comfortably above your volume, so a 50,000 litre pool suits a unit rated for 60kL or more rather than one rated exactly 50kL. Hot summers and heavy swimming use push chlorine demand up.

How long does a salt cell last?

One budget replacement cell is specified at around 9,000 hours of running when the water chemistry is correct. Real life depends on run hours, pH, calcium and how often the cell scales up. High pH and hard water shorten it the most.

Is a salt water pool cheaper to run than chlorine?

Often, over a few years, because you stop buying most of your granular chlorine. Against that you pay for the unit, salt top-ups, a little extra electricity and a new cell every few years. You still need pH adjuster and the odd shock dose.

Does a salt water pool need less maintenance?

It needs different maintenance rather than none. You still test pH and chlorine, keep the salt level in range, clean or check the cell and look after the pump and filter. What you lose is the weekly routine of dosing chlorine by hand.
