Every Cape Town pool owner has lived this. The power goes at 10am, the timer loses its place, and by the time you notice, the pump has been running at 2am for a fortnight or has not run at all for a week. Both cost you: one on electricity, the other in a green pool.
A digital timer with battery backup keeps its schedule through an outage. Better still, a smart controller lets you shift the run window around the schedule and see at a glance whether the pump actually ran today. Most Cape Town pools are either overfiltered in winter or underfiltered in summer, because the timer was set once in 2014 and never touched. Broadly you want to turn the pool volume over daily, which means longer hours in a hot February and much less in July. We set summer and winter schedules, line the chlorinator up with them and show you how to change it yourself. On a variable speed pump the savings are significant, because running longer at low speed uses far less power than short bursts at full.
