Pool Grout Wearing Away: Assess the Gaps Between Tiles

Workers applying a white finish inside an empty pool.

Workers applying a white finish inside an empty pool.

Pool grout wearing away needs an assessment of the joints, the water history and the tiles around them, not simply another layer spread over the gaps. If the tiles remain firmly attached, regrouting may be possible without replacing the whole band. First establish whether material is actually missing and why it deteriorated.

A dark line between mosaics can look alarming while still being full of sound grout. Conversely, a neat-looking tile band can contain recessed, crumbly joints. This guide helps you describe the difference, prepare for an inspection and compare a repair scope without dismantling the pool yourself.

Assess pool grout wearing away before choosing a repair

Look from a stable, dry position with good daylight. Photograph the same stretch straight on and at a slight angle, including an unaffected area for comparison. Note whether the joint is merely discoloured, visibly recessed or completely open. Keep the original photographs so an assessor can zoom in rather than relying on a compressed message image.

Do not scrape joints with a screwdriver to see how deep the damage goes. That can chip tile edges or disturb material that was still holding. Equally, do not drain the pool for a better photograph. Safe access and any water-level reduction belong in the repair plan after the site has been assessed.

For pool mosaic and tile repairs, explain whether your main concern is missing joint material or tiles coming away. These are related but different jobs. Sound tiles with deteriorated joints may need a narrower scope than an installation whose bond has failed.

What pool tile grout erosion looks like

Useful observations include uneven joint depth, small pieces accumulating nearby and channels where the original joint face used to be. Record these as observations, not proof of a particular chemical problem. The original joint profile, tile edges and lighting can all affect how a gap appears in a photograph.

  • Mark the affected stretch on a simple sketch of the pool.
  • Record whether the change is new, gradual or returning after repair.
  • Note sharp exposed edges, displaced tiles or visible cracks separately.
  • Keep swimmers away from any area with loose pieces or cutting edges.

Check missing waterline grout against the rest of the pool

Compare the normal waterline with the submerged joints you can see safely. Is the loss confined to one section, present around the full band or concentrated near an earlier patch? A pattern helps the contractor choose where to inspect first. It does not establish the cause on its own.

Also distinguish ordinary tile joints from deliberate movement joints. These serve different purposes and may use different materials. An apparently wider line at a change in construction should not automatically be filled with the same rigid grout used between small tiles.

TAL’s residential mosaic installation guidance requires construction and structural joints to continue through the tiled finish as movement joints. It also says the shell must be proved watertight before tiling. That is why closing visible tile gaps is not a substitute for investigating unexplained water loss.

Review possible pool grout chemical damage

LATICRETE’s regrouting guidance identifies several possible contributors to cement grout deterioration: unsuitable water chemistry, premature filling, inadequate movement allowance, unsuitable grout and installation or preparation problems. A low test result today does not prove which condition caused damage months ago.

Collect water-test records, the names of routine treatment products and any unusual recent treatment. Include changes in the person maintaining the pool or the cleaning equipment. If you do not know the old grout product, say so. Guessing its composition can lead to an unsuitable replacement being specified.

Arrange pool water testing and balancing when the chemistry history is unclear. Ask for a written result and recommendations suited to the existing finish and equipment. Do not add extra chemicals as an experiment to see whether grout stops crumbling.

Tell the assessor about acid cleaning, hard scrubbing or pressure washing, including where it was done. These details are more useful than saying the pool has always been cleaned normally. Avoid another aggressive clean before inspection because it may remove useful evidence or enlarge already weakened joints.

Continue only routine care that is safe for the installation and supported by the relevant product instructions. Never mix treatment chemicals or combine cleaners in an improvised recipe. If cleaning requirements and repair instructions appear to conflict, ask the contractor or product manufacturer to resolve that conflict in writing.

Keep good tiles where the assessment allows

Send clear photographs of the affected joints and tell us whether any tiles have moved.

What a pool tile joint inspection should establish

The inspection should answer more than whether new grout will fit. Ask how the contractor will assess surrounding tile adhesion, existing joint material and the condition at corners, fittings and movement joints. Some findings may remain provisional until loose material is carefully removed.

You do not need to tap every tile or prise at a doubtful edge before the visit. Let the assessor choose appropriate checks. If they recommend tile removal, ask which observations justify it and whether a limited opening can clarify the condition without committing to full replacement.

Questions that distinguish a joint repair from broader work
ObservationQuestion for the assessor
Recessed joints, tiles still alignedAre the tiles sufficiently sound for regrouting, and how will that be checked?
A crack crosses several tilesDoes the investigation need to extend beyond the grout?
Repeated loss beside an earlier patchWhat caused the first repair to fail, and what will change?
Water loss accompanies missing groutWhat separate testing is needed before promising a watertight repair?

Be cautious about a quote that treats every gap as proof the entire tile band must go. Be equally cautious about a promise that surface regrouting will solve every leak. A useful recommendation identifies what is known, what needs checking and what the proposed work will actually address.

Make pool regrouting preparation explicit

A skim over deteriorated grout is not equivalent to preparing sound joints. LATICRETE’s guidance calls for removal of unsound material, cleaning and product-specific preparation before new grout is installed. It also warns against damaging a waterproofing membrane during tile repair. Those are reasons to use an experienced pool tiler rather than treat this like a small bathroom touch-up.

Ask for the exact grout name and confirmation that it is approved for the intended swimming-pool exposure. Epoxy and cement-based products are not interchangeable simply because the colours match. LATICRETE notes advantages of appropriate epoxy grouts in submerged conditions, but compatibility and the complete installation still matter.

  1. Agree which joints and tiles are included in the initial scope.
  2. Have the contractor explain removal, cleaning and protection of adjacent finishes.
  3. Confirm the new grout system and treatment of movement joints.
  4. Set a process for approving extra work if hidden defects are found.
  5. Obtain the curing, refill and aftercare instructions before work starts.

Keep spare tiles if you already have them, but do not assume old stock is automatically suitable for every repair. Ask about colour variation between new and existing grout, and whether a sample area is practical. A sound repair can remain visible, particularly when old grout has weathered unevenly.

Arrange access, water handling and the handover

For a home in Sea Point, include the pool’s access route and any building-management arrangements with your enquiry. The contractor needs to know how materials and removed grout can be handled safely, not just how long the affected tile band looks.

When requesting pool services in Green Point, mention shared entrances, restricted working hours or limited storage if they apply to your property.

Ask who decides whether the water level must change, who handles that work and what conditions must be checked first. Refilling must follow the specified product system, with applicable water-use requirements checked separately. Do not borrow a cure period from a different grout simply because a neighbour used it.

At handover, review the agreed repair areas and any additional findings. Request product details, photographs of preparation where available, aftercare instructions and the process for reporting a concern. Keep the first water-test results with the repair record so future advice is based on evidence rather than memory.

Questions about worn pool grout

Does missing grout mean the pool is leaking?

Not necessarily. Missing joint material needs attention, but tiles and grout should not be treated as proof of the shell’s watertightness. Report unexplained water loss separately so the contractor can decide whether leak investigation is needed.

Can the tiles stay when the grout is replaced?

They may be able to stay if their bond and surrounding installation are sound. That must be checked rather than assumed from appearance. Loose, cracked or displaced tiles can change the repair scope.

Is epoxy always the right replacement grout?

No single product is automatically right for every pool. Appropriate epoxy grouts can offer advantages in submerged conditions, but the tile, joints, preparation and exposure must suit the named system. Ask for the manufacturer’s specification.

How soon can the pool be filled after regrouting?

Use the curing and filling instructions for the actual products installed and the site conditions. Different systems have different requirements. Agree the water plan before the repair rather than choosing a swimming date first.
