Pools on the West Coast live a harder life than pools anywhere else in Cape Town, and anyone who has owned one in Table View or Big Bay already knows why. The southeaster is the defining fact of pool ownership out here. It strips heat off the surface faster than anywhere else in the metro, which is why an uncovered pool in Bloubergstrand never quite warms up even in January, and it drives fine sand and dust into the water every single day. Weir baskets fill, filters load up quicker, and the pool needs more filtration hours than the same pool would need five kilometres inland.
Then there is the salt air. It attacks pool equipment relentlessly. Pump housings, heat pump coils, DB boxes, light fittings and anything with an exposed screw corrodes years earlier here than it does in Durbanville. We plan for it: stainless where it matters, enclosures that are properly sealed, and equipment sited out of the direct spray line rather than wherever the plumber found space.
Practical advice for anyone on this strip: a decent cover pays for itself twice over, once in heat and once in the sand it keeps out. And if your pool is exposed, expect a filter and pump that work harder, so check them more often than the manual suggests.
