Decking is what turns a pool into a place you spend the evening. Kwik Pools builds pool decking in Cape Town in hardwood, composite and raised timber, detailed so it survives sun, splash and a southeaster. Call or WhatsApp 084 483 1774.

Pool decking we build in Cape Town

  • Ground level timber decks running flush to the coping
  • Raised decks and platforms over sloping ground, which is half of Cape Town
  • Composite decking for low maintenance and coastal exposure
  • Deck extensions off an existing patio or braai area
  • Built in benches, steps and screening
  • Repairs and re oiling of tired decks that are structurally sound

Timber or composite pool decking

Hardwood looks and feels better, ages beautifully and costs less up front. The trade off is upkeep. In Cape Town sun a hardwood deck wants oiling once or twice a year, and if you skip it for two seasons it greys and starts to splinter. Balau is the standard around here for good reason.

Composite costs more and never quite has the warmth of real wood, but you wash it and that is the maintenance done. Near the sea in Bloubergstrand, Sunset Beach or Camps Bay, where salt spray attacks everything, composite is often the smarter long term buy. Some boards do get hot underfoot in direct sun, so we will show you which ones before you choose.

Building it to last next to a pool

A deck around a pool has a harder life than a deck anywhere else. It gets splashed with chlorinated or salted water daily and it sits over ground that stays damp. We build on treated substructure with proper ventilation underneath, keep timber off the ground, use stainless fixings rather than anything that will bleed rust down your boards, and set gaps that drain fast without swallowing a phone. Boards get laid so the fall runs away from the pool.

Where the deck meets coping we detail the junction so water cannot track into the shell edge, which ties into how we handle pool paving and coping. If the pool itself is due for work, decking is best done after the shell, which is how we sequence it inside a pool renovation.

Questions we get

How long does a deck take to build?

A straightforward ground level deck is usually under two weeks. Raised decks on a slope take longer because of the substructure and the levels.

Will the timber splinter?

Not if it is a decent hardwood, sanded, and oiled on schedule. Neglect is what causes splinters, not the material.

Can you deck over old paving?

Often yes, if the paving is stable and there is height to work with. It is a quick way to transform a tired surround without lifting everything.

Do you handle safety around the deck?

Balustrades on raised decks, and we can plan anchor points for safety nets or fencing while we build rather than drilling in later.
