Sitting under Table Mountain and Lion’s Head means large parts of the City Bowl lose direct sun early in the afternoon, especially in winter. A shaded, walled pool stays cold, holds damp and grows algae in conditions where an open pool would be fine. It also means solar heating is often a poor fit here, because the roof space that would carry it is either shaded, heritage restricted or simply not facing the right way. A heat pump usually makes far more sense.
Walled courtyards cut the wind, which is good, but they also trap leaves and cut evaporation in a way that changes how the water behaves. These pools reward a slightly different dosing approach and they do very well on a fortnightly service plan rather than a full weekly one.
Narrow lanes, no side access, shared driveways and steep steps are the norm from Higgovale down through Gardens. It shapes what is realistic: a precast shell may be impossible where a hand dug concrete build is not, and any job involving draining and replastering needs planning around how material gets in and rubble gets out. We look at access first and quote honestly, including when the answer is that a job is not practical.
Most new pools we put in on this side are plunge pools, and they suit these properties perfectly. Small volume, cheap to heat, and they turn a courtyard into the best room in the house.
