A heat pump is the closest thing to a thermostat for your pool. Set it to 28 and it holds it, cloud or no cloud. Kwik Pools supplies, installs, services and repairs pool heat pumps in Cape Town. Call or WhatsApp 084 483 1774 for a sizing and a quote.
A heat pump does not make heat, it moves it. It pulls warmth out of the outside air and transfers it into the pool water, which is why it delivers several kilowatts of heating for every kilowatt of electricity it draws. Compared to an old element style heater it is not in the same league. That efficiency drops as the air gets colder, so a Cape July costs more per degree than a Cape September, but it keeps working well below the temperatures we get here.
We plumb the heat pump into the return line after the filter and before the chlorinator cell, on its own isolating valves and a bypass so the unit can be serviced or bypassed without shutting the pool down. It needs clear air all around it and somewhere for condensate to run, and it needs its own protected circuit at the DB. That condensate point catches people out: a heat pump drips water in normal operation, and every summer someone phones convinced their brand new heater is leaking.
We set the run times to overlap your filtration cycle rather than fight it, and hand over knowing you can actually work the controller.
Faults we see regularly are low refrigerant after a knock or a corroded line, fan and capacitor failures, flow switches stuck by debris, control boards taken out by surges during load shedding, and units slowly strangled by leaves packed into the coil. Most of these are repairable if the unit is a decent brand. We check the whole picture, including whether the pool pump is still delivering the flow the heater needs, before condemning anything.
Two to four days for a standard pool on first heat up, then it just holds temperature. Rushing that with an oversized unit is not the answer, a cover is.
Yes, and it is a great pairing. Run it in the middle of the day when your panels are producing and you are heating almost for free.
Very well. Let solar do the free work and the heat pump cover the gap. Both feed the same pool heating setup.
Keep the coil clear, keep leaves out and get the flow checked yearly. That is most of it, and it fits neatly into a service plan.
