The pool filter sand price itself is one of the smaller numbers in pool ownership, which is exactly why so many people leave the change far too long. Sand is cheap. A summer of cloudy water because the bed has channelled is not. Here is what it costs, how much you need and when it is due.
Pool filter sand price and quantities
- Silica pool sand. Roughly R120 to R220 for a 25 kg bag.
- Glass filter media. Roughly R350 to R600 for a 20 to 25 kg bag.
- Typical small filter, up to about 500 mm tank. Around 75 to 100 kg, so three or four bags.
- Standard domestic filter, 600 to 700 mm. Around 125 to 175 kg, so five to seven bags.
- Large or commercial filters. 200 kg and up.
Labour is the rest of it. Emptying a wet sand bed by hand, checking the laterals, refilling and rebedding is a couple of hours of unpleasant work, so a full change typically lands somewhere between R1,200 and R2,800 including media on a domestic pool.
When does filter sand need changing?
Every five to seven years for most Cape Town pools. Bring that forward if you have heavy leaf load, borehole water, or a pool that has been green more than once.
The tells are consistent:
- You are backwashing constantly to keep the pressure down
- Water stays cloudy no matter how much chlorine you add
- The pressure gauge sits high straight after a backwash
- Fine dust settles back on the floor within hours of vacuuming
What is happening inside is that the grains have rounded off and the bed has channelled, so water runs straight through instead of being filtered. In the harder water areas of the Northern Suburbs we also see sand cemented by calcium into a solid block, which no amount of backwashing will fix.
Is glass media worth the extra?
The pool filter sand price for glass is roughly double, and it does three useful things: it filters finer, it resists channelling and clumping, and it needs less backwashing. That last point matters more than it used to, given what water costs in Cape Town.
On a pool that struggles with fine dust and pollen, particularly on the West Coast where blown sand is constant, glass is worth the money. On a sheltered pool with a light load, ordinary silica is perfectly adequate.
Do not just tip new sand on top
While the tank is open, the laterals and standpipe need checking. A cracked lateral is what sends sand back into your pool through the returns, and refilling over a broken one just repeats the problem with new sand. This is part of what our pool filter repairs work covers.
The multiport gasket is worth inspecting at the same time. A perished spider gasket sends water to waste on filter, which is a slow, invisible way to lose both water and money.
What a sand change actually involves
It is worth knowing what you are paying for, because the labour is most of the cost.
- The pump is isolated and the filter drained down.
- The old bed comes out by hand or by vacuum. Wet sand is heavy and unpleasant, and this is the slow part.
- The laterals and standpipe get inspected. A cracked lateral is exactly what sends sand back into your pool.
- The standpipe is protected and the tank refilled with water before the media goes in, so the laterals are not shattered by the weight.
- New media goes in to the correct level, roughly two thirds of the tank, leaving freeboard for the bed to expand during backwash.
- The multiport is refitted with a fresh gasket where needed, then backwashed and rinsed until the water runs clear.
Skipping the lateral inspection is the shortcut that costs people twice.
Backwashing, water and what it costs you
Every backwash sends water to waste. On an old, channelled bed you end up backwashing far more often, so a tired filter quietly raises your water bill as well as your chlorine bill. With Cape Town water and sanitation tariffs where they are, that adds up faster than the pool filter sand price you were avoiding. Current tariffs are published by the City of Cape Town.
This is the strongest practical argument for glass media on a heavily loaded pool: it needs less backwashing, so it wastes less water over its life.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use builders sand in my pool filter?
No. It is the wrong grade and shape, it compacts and it will ruin your filtration. Use proper graded pool silica or glass media.
How do I know how much sand my filter takes?
It is usually printed on the tank label. If not, tank diameter gives a good guide, and we will work it out on site.
Why is sand blowing back into the pool?
A cracked lateral or a broken standpipe. It does not fix itself and it slowly empties your filter, so open it up sooner rather than later.
Does changing the sand fix a green pool?
It fixes the filtration half of the problem, which is often the reason a pool keeps turning. The chemistry side is handled under green pool recovery.
