Heat and wind together drive evaporation harder here than most of Cape Town. Owners top up more often than they expect, and that creates a real diagnostic problem: it becomes genuinely difficult to tell normal summer loss from an actual leak. We bucket test first rather than guessing either way.
The heat also means chlorine demand. An under stabilised pool here can lose most of its free chlorine in a single February afternoon, and stabiliser is the number we most often find sitting in the wrong place.
The other thing worth knowing locally is that this is one of the few areas where getting a genuinely long swimming season is realistic. A sheltered Somerset West pool with a correctly sized heat pump and a cover is comfortably usable from September through to May, which is not a promise we would make on the Atlantic side.
