The classic signature. Water only falls to the level of the leak, so a pool that drops to the weir mouth and holds is telling you exactly where it is going.

The weir is a plastic box set into a concrete or marbelite shell — two materials that expand and contract at different rates, bonded together and asked to hold water for thirty years. The joint between them is the weak point, and Cape Town does its best to find it.

Wet winters and dry summers shift the ground and work on that joint year after year.
Older weir bodies go brittle with UV and age, and eventually crack under normal load.
A faceplate done up too hard will crack the housing, sometimes years later.
The joint where the suction pipe enters the weir is a common and hidden failure.
A weir that was never properly bedded into the shell will always be the first thing to go.

Not every cracked weir needs replacing. A hairline crack in a body that is still sound can often be sealed properly and will hold for years.
But when the weir has cracked through at the throat, or the plastic flexes when you press it, a repair is a short-term fix and we will say so. Replacement means cutting the old unit out, setting the new one in and making the surround good — more work, but it ends the problem.
