Pool safety nets in Cape Town: your options

• Safety nets. A tensioned net across the pool, anchored into the coping, that will hold a child’s weight. Almost invisible from a distance, quick to roll back, and the most popular choice in Cape Town gardens.
• Removable mesh fencing. Panels around the pool with a self closing, self latching gate. Keeps the pool separate from the play area rather than covering it, and comes down when you need the space.
• Glass or steel fencing. Permanent, architectural, no obstruction of the view. The premium option and the one most new builds go for.
• Solid safety covers. Anchored covers that carry weight and keep leaves out too, covered under pool covers.

What actually makes a pool safety net safe

Tension and anchor spacing. A net that sags, has anchors too far apart or is fitted into crumbling coping is decoration, not safety. We fit stainless anchors at the correct spacing, tension the net properly, and check the coping can hold them. If the paving around your pool is failing, that gets sorted first as part of coping work rather than drilled into and hoped for.

The other half of the job is you being able to use it. A net that takes fifteen minutes and two adults to remove gets left off, and a net that is off is worth nothing. We size the sections so one person can roll it back in a minute or two.

Nets, pets and leaves

A well tensioned net keeps dogs out as well as toddlers, which spares you both the risk and the hair in the filter. It does not stop leaves, so if that is your main problem you want a cover rather than a net, or both.

Is a pool net legally enough?

National building regulations require pools to be secured against unsupervised access, and municipal by laws vary. A correctly installed net or fence is generally accepted, but check with your municipality and your insurer for your specific property.

Will it damage my coping?

Anchors are recessed and sit flush when the net is off. Fitted properly, they are barely noticeable underfoot.

Can you fit a net to an odd shaped pool?

Yes. Freeform, kidney and L shaped pools are measured and made to fit. Very large pools get split into sections so they stay manageable.

How long do nets last?

Several years in Cape Town sun before UV starts to tell. We check the tension and the anchors on request, or as part of a service plan visit.
