Solar Pool Heating Cape Town

  • Solar Pool Heating Cape Town

Cape Town has sunshine most of the year and it is free. Solar collectors on the roof push your pool from bracing to genuinely swimmable for months longer, with almost nothing on the electricity bill. Kwik Pools installs solar pool heating in Cape Town. Call or WhatsApp 084 483 1774.

How solar pool heating works

Your existing pool pump pushes water through black collector panels or tubing on the roof. The sun heats the water on the way through and it comes back into the pool a few degrees warmer. Run that for a few hours a day across a whole summer and you hold four to six degrees over an unheated pool. There is no separate motor, no gas and no meaningful running cost, just a controller that opens the loop when the roof is hotter than the water and closes it when it is not.

What solar does well and what it does not

  • Excellent for stretching the season, roughly September into May
  • Keeps a summer pool warm overnight instead of losing it all by morning
  • Effectively free to run once installed
  • Very low maintenance, no compressor, no moving parts on the roof
  • Cannot deliver a set temperature on demand and will not heat through a grey Cape winter week
  • Needs unshaded roof space, ideally north facing, roughly half to three quarters of the pool surface area

We would rather tell you that up front than sell you a system you resent in July. If you want a guaranteed temperature year round, pair it with a heat pump or start there instead.

Panels or tube matting

Rigid glazed panels perform better in wind and on colder days and look tidier on a visible roof. Unglazed tube matting is cheaper, lighter and easy to lay on a flat or low pitch roof, and it works well on a sheltered site. Wind is the deciding factor for a lot of Cape Town homes, especially out in Table View and Blouberg where the southeaster strips heat off an exposed mat. We look at the roof before recommending anything.

We check that your existing pump has the head to lift water to the roof, run the flow and return lines neatly, fit the controller with a roof sensor and a water sensor, add isolating valves so the array can be drained for maintenance, and set the timer to run in the hottest part of the day. Roof penetrations get sealed properly. If your pump is old or undersized for the lift, we will say so, and that is pump work to sort first rather than a solar problem to discover later.

Questions we get

How much warmer will my pool be?

Four to six degrees over an unheated pool through the shoulder season, with a properly sized array and a cover. Without a cover, less.

Do I need a cover as well?

You will get far more out of the system with one. Heat gained during the day mostly leaves overnight off an open surface, which is covered under pool heating generally.

Will it work on a flat roof?

Yes, with the right mounting and matting choice.

How long does solar heating last?

Good panels run well over a decade. The parts that need attention are the controller and the sensors, both inexpensive.
