Cape Town gives you maybe four months of comfortable swimming without help. Heating turns that into eight or nine. Kwik Pools supplies and installs pool heating in Cape Town, heat pumps, solar and gas, sized to your pool rather than to a brochure. Call or WhatsApp 084 483 1774.
Heat pumps are the reliable all rounder. They pull warmth out of the air and move it into the water, so you get a set temperature on demand from roughly August through to May, regardless of cloud. They use electricity, though far less than an element, and they need a sensible spot with airflow. This is what most of our customers end up on. Details on pool heat pumps.
Solar heating costs almost nothing to run once it is on the roof. It is brilliant for stretching the season at either end and for keeping a pool swimmable through summer nights. It cannot make heat on a grey July week, and it needs north facing roof space. Details on solar pool heating.
Gas heats fast and is the right answer for a plunge pool or a spa you use occasionally and want hot in an hour. Running cost is high, so it is a poor fit for keeping a big pool warm all season.
Plenty of Cape Town homes end up with solar plus a heat pump: solar does the free heavy lifting, the heat pump tops up when the weather does not play along.
This is the part people skip and then complain about their running costs. An uncovered pool loses most of its heat overnight through evaporation off the surface. Whatever you spend on heating, a cover roughly halves what it costs you to keep the water warm, and it works while you sleep. We will always quote heating and a pool cover together, because heating without one is pouring money into the air.
Undersized heating is the single most common complaint we get called out to. A unit that is too small runs constantly, never reaches temperature on a cold week and costs a fortune doing it. We size on your actual volume, your surface area, how exposed the pool is to wind, whether you have a cover and what temperature you actually want. A shaded, windy pool in Kommetjie is a completely different job to a sheltered north facing pool in Welgemoed.
Most people settle around 27 to 28 degrees. Every degree above that costs noticeably more to hold.
With a properly sized heat pump and a cover, yes, comfortably. Solar alone will not do a Cape winter.
Usually. We check flow rates first, because a heater on an undersized or tired pump is a false economy. If the pump needs attention we cover that under pool pump repairs.
A heat pump is normally a one day job. Solar depends on roof access and panel runs, usually one to two days.
