What a salt chlorinator actually does

It is not a chlorine free pool, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. The unit passes a low salt solution over a cell and makes its own chlorine on site, continuously, at a strength the pool actually needs. You stop handling granules, the smell goes away, and the water feels noticeably softer. The salt level sits around a tenth of sea water, so you barely taste it.

How long does a salt cell last?

Five to seven years if it is sized right and kept free of scale. Three years if it is undersized and running at full output every day.

Will salt damage my paving or coping?

Splash out on sandstone and unsealed cement can show salt marks over time. Sealing the coping sorts it. Cape Town has plenty of salt pools next to sandstone and it is not a reason to avoid one.

Do I still need to test the water?

Yes. Salt pools still need pH, stabiliser and calcium in range, and they drift alkaline over time. This is exactly what a water testing and balancing visit covers.

What does it cost to run?

Far less than buying chlorine every week once you are past the install. The cell is the consumable and you replace it every few years.
